01. History

History of The Kirklin Clinic of University of Alabama (UAB) Hospital

The University of Alabama Hospital is highly regarded for its work in cancer care, which takes place at sveral facilities including the Kirklin Clinic and the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. The center has been designated by the National Cancer Institute as a comprehensive cancer center, and was among the first group of eight cancer centers to ever receive this recognition back in 1971. The UAB’s centers treat approximately 5,000 new cancer patients each year and over 20,000 patients annually.

About 400 doctors, researchers and scientists are part of the University of Alabama health network, giving patients the opportunity to work with an array of doctors with varied expertise. The UAB hospital is dedicated to providing patients with the best care possible, from detection and diagnosis to treatment and supportive care into survivorship. Each cancer patient is treated with a comprehensive approach, so experts in different disciplines like thoracic surgery and radiology work together on each individual case to develop the ideal treatment plan. Patients may be treated with a multimodal approach, combining surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy and other promising treatments.

UAB is also heavily involved in cancer research, with at least 200 active clinical trials ongoing at any given time. Many exciting advances have come out of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center in recent years. Researchers at the Birmingham facility have successfully identified a genetic link between obesity and colon cancer, reversed health disparities by expanding breast cancer screening to under-served populations in the Deep South and discovered a series of biomarkers that can help determine if a patient is at risk for colorectal cancer. UAB researchers have also been responsible for advances in chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and diet for mesothelioma patients.
